Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of CAD West in 2021 compared to South Australia shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 31.1% of the population used English only, and 54.4% used a non-English language, compared with 77.6% and 17.8% respectively for South Australia.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in CAD West was Mandarin, with 25.6% of the population, or 1,182 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of CAD West and South Australia in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (25.6% compared to 1.8%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (6.2% compared to 0.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (2.8% compared to 1.2%)

Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 2,404 or 2205.5%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 1,191 or 490.1%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in CAD West between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+1,161 persons)
  • Cantonese (+269 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+128 persons)
  • Hindi (+91 persons)
