Rural North East's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Rural North East in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (414 people or 27.7%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (176 people or 11.8%)
- Construction (132 people or 8.8%)
In combination, these three industries employed 722 people in total or 48.3% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, South Gippsland Shire employed 15.0% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 13.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 10.4% in Construction.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Rural North East and South Gippsland Shire were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (27.7% compared to 15.0%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (6.4% compared to 8.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (6.2% compared to 8.0%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (11.8% compared to 13.5%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Rural North East increased by 178 between 2016 and 2021.
There were no major differences in Rural North East between 2016 and 2021.
