In 2021, the largest age group in the Rest of Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 18,000 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the Rest of Sydney in 2021 compared to Western Sydney (LGA) shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.8% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 20.7% and 13.5% respectively for Western Sydney (LGA).

The major differences between the age structure of the Rest of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) were:

  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (5.4% compared to 7.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (5.1% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 10 to 14 (5.4% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (5.0% compared to 6.1%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Rest of Sydney's population increased by 88,963 people (4.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.8% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+18,000 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+14,232 persons)
  • 10 to 14 (+13,152 persons)
  • 75 to 79 (+13,113 persons)
