In 2016, 33% of people in the Greater Western Sydney Region, came from countries where English was not their first language.

Country of Birth data identifies where people were born and is indicative of the level of cultural diversity in the Greater Western Sydney Region. The mix of Country of Birth groups is also indicative of historical settlement patterns, as source countries for Australia's immigration program have varied significantly over time.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 37.7% of the population was born overseas, and 32.7% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 36.7% and 29.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the Greater Western Sydney Region was India, where 4.1% of the population, or 87,364 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in India (4.1% compared to 2.7%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Vietnam (2.9% compared to 1.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (3.1% compared to 4.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (2.3% compared to 3.7%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 122,589 or 17.8%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 123,357 or 21.2%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:

  • India (+31,504 persons)
  • China (+19,817 persons)
  • Iraq (+10,102 persons)
  • Pakistan (+7,839 persons)
