Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region in 2011 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 35.3% of the population was born overseas, and 29.8% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 34.2% and 26.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the Greater Western Sydney Region was India, where 2.9% of the population, or 55,234 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in Vietnam (2.8% compared to 1.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (2.8% compared to 4.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (2.3% compared to 3.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of people born overseas increased by 89,335 or 15.1%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 87,644 or 18.1%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2006 and 2011 were for those born in:

  • India (+25,012 persons)
  • China (+10,863 persons)
  • Iraq (+8,308 persons)
  • Philippines (+6,479 persons)
