Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 37.4% of the population was born overseas, and 32.2% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 36.7% and 29.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the Greater Western Sydney Region was India, where 4.2% of the population, or 82,099 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in India (4.2% compared to 2.7%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Vietnam (2.8% compared to 1.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (3.3% compared to 4.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (2.5% compared to 3.7%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 39,346 or 5.7%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 47,090 or 8.1%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:

  • India (+26,239 persons)
  • China (+17,228 persons)
  • United Kingdom (-7,306 persons)
  • Pakistan (+6,529 persons)
