More Greater Western Sydney Region residents worked in manufacturing than any other industry in 2011.

The Greater Western Sydney Region’s industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Greater Western Sydney Region in 2011 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Manufacturing (100,303 people or 11.8%)
  • Retail Trade (90,974 people or 10.7%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (90,398 people or 10.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 281,675 people in total or 33.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Sydney employed 8.5% in Manufacturing; 9.8% in Retail Trade; and 10.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Greater Western Sydney Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (11.8% compared to 8.5%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (6.6% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.9% compared to 9.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (5.1% compared to 6.6%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Greater Western Sydney Region increased by 66,302 between 2006 and 2011.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2011 in the Greater Western Sydney Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+16,802 persons)
  • Education and Training (+7,687 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+6,698 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+5,426 persons)
