Ancestry

The three largest ancestries in the Greater Western Sydney Region in 2011 were Australian, English and Chinese.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in the Greater Western Sydney Region regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Ancestry data, should be combined with data on Birthplace, Language Spoken at Home and Religion for a more complete picture of the Greater Western Sydney Region's ethnic characteristics.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Greater Western Sydney Region in 2011 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • Australian (476,290 people or 24.8%)
  • English (423,083 people or 22.0%)
  • Chinese (126,348 people or 6.6%)
  • Irish (118,811 people or 6.2%)
  • Lebanese (93,266 people or 4.8%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 1,237,798 responses in total, or 64.34% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in the Greater Western Sydney Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people with Lebanese ancestry (4.8% compared to 3.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of people with English ancestry (22.0% compared to 25.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of people with Irish ancestry (6.2% compared to 8.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of people with Chinese ancestry (6.6% compared to 8.2%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the reported ancestries of the population in this area between 2006 and 2011 were:

  • Australian (-36,333 persons)
  • English (+35,755 persons)
  • Indian (+24,382 persons)
