In 2021, Regional NT had similar proportion of children (under 18) and a similar proportion of persons aged 60 or older than Northern Territory.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Regional NT in 2021 compared to Northern Territory shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a similar proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 23.1% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 17.5% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 22.7% and 17.3% respectively for Northern Territory.

The major differences between the age structure of Regional NT and Northern Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (11.7% compared to 10.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (20.0% compared to 21.1%)

Emerging groups

From 1996 to 2021, Regional NT's population increased by 15,798 people (17.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.64% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+7,867 people)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+6,013 people)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+3,788 people)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+2,321 people)
