Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Western Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 19.5% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 26.2% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.8% and 22.7% respectively for Western Australia.

The major differences between the female age structure of Greater Adelaide and Western Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Seniors' (11.4% compared to 9.6%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Frail aged' (3.2% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (19.5% compared to 20.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Primary schoolers' (7.8% compared to 8.8%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Greater Adelaide's female population increased by 45,150 people (6.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.33% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+15,171 females)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+8,597 females)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+6,860 females)
