Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Regional QLD shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 19.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 26.0% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 20.8% and 26.8% respectively for Regional QLD.

The major differences between the female age structure of Greater Adelaide and Regional QLD were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (13.8% compared to 12.4%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (8.5% compared to 7.6%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Frail aged' (3.2% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (11.4% compared to 12.7%)

Emerging groups

From 1996 to 2021, Greater Adelaide's female population increased by 148,835 people (26.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.96% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+35,656 females)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+33,404 females)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+26,089 females)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+13,857 females)
