Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Regional VIC in 2021 compared to Australian Capital Territory shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.6% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.1% were one-parent families, compared with 30.8% and 9.3% respectively for Australian Capital Territory.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 27.5% compared to 24.8% in Australian Capital Territory while the proportion of couples without children was 28.0% compared to 25.8% in Australian Capital Territory.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Regional VIC increased by 149,233 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Regional VIC between 2006 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+50,165 households)
  • Couples without children (+43,393 households)
