Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in South Australia in 2021 compared to Tasmania shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 26.9% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.8% were one-parent families, compared with 24.0% and 11.1% respectively for Tasmania.

There were a similar proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 27.3% compared to 27.6% in Tasmania while the proportion of couples without children was 26.4% compared to 28.3% in Tasmania.

Emerging groups

The number of households in South Australia increased by 79,274 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in South Australia between 2011 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+24,630 households)
  • Couples without children (+18,854 households)
  • Couples with children (+16,776 households)
  • One parent families (+9,731 households)
