Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types in Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Queensland shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.9% were one-parent families, compared with 27.9% and 11.1% respectively for Queensland.
There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 26.1% compared to 23.1% in Queensland while the proportion of couples without children was 27.7% compared to 26.4% in Queensland.
Emerging groups
The number of households in Regional NSW increased by 240,704 between 2001 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types in Regional NSW between 2001 and 2021 were:
- Lone person (+82,099 households)
- Couples without children (+75,315 households)
- One parent families (+25,740 households)
- Couples with children (+10,256 households)
