In 2021, the largest age group in New South Wales was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 78,849 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of New South Wales in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.0% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.9% and 15.5% respectively for Victoria.

The major difference between the male age structure of New South Wales and Victoria is:

  • A smaller percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (7.0% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, New South Wales's male population increased by 756,741 people (23.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.42% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
