Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional WA was 50 to 54 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1996 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 13,339 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Regional WA in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.3% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.9% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.9% and 15.5% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the male age structure of Regional WA and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 60 to 64 (6.9% compared to 5.4%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 55 to 59 (7.2% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (4.8% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (6.3% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

From 1996 to 2021, Regional WA's male population increased by 85,578 people (37.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.28% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+13,339 males)
  • 55 to 59 (+12,271 males)
  • 50 to 54 (+11,033 males)
  • 65 to 69 (+10,640 males)
