Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional Australia was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 65 to 69 year olds, increasing by 264,573 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional Australia in 2021 compared to Canberra shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.8% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.3% and 13.5% respectively for Canberra.

The major differences between the age structure of Regional Australia and Canberra were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (6.3% compared to 4.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.9% compared to 8.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (6.1% compared to 8.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (5.4% compared to 7.6%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Regional Australia's population increased by 1,834,587 people (27.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.22% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 65 to 69 (+264,573 persons)
  • 60 to 64 (+264,489 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+233,810 persons)
  • 55 to 59 (+201,782 persons)
