More City of Monash female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in City of Monash in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (9,092 females or 20.9%)
  • Education and Training (5,986 females or 13.8%)
  • Retail Trade (4,744 females or 10.9%)

In combination, these three industries employed 19,822 females in total or 45.7% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Greater Melbourne employed 21.7% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.0% in Education and Training; and 10.7% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of the City of Monash and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (10.1% compared to 8.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (4.0% compared to 5.6%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in City of Monash increased by 9,034 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2006 and 2021 in the City of Monash were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,275 females)
  • Education and Training (+1,489 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,369 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+816 females)
