Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Western Sydney (LGA) in 2021 compared to Campbelltown City shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 48.3% of the population used English only, and 45.7% used a non-English language, compared with 57.8% and 35.8% respectively for Campbelltown City.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Western Sydney (LGA) was Arabic, with 7.1% of the population, or 185,377 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Western Sydney (LGA) and Campbelltown City in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (7.1% compared to 4.2%)
  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (3.9% compared to 1.2%)
  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (3.7% compared to 0.9%)
  • A smaller percentage using Bengali at home (1.1% compared to 4.2%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 350,663 or 41.7%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 121,987 or 10.7%.
