Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Western Sydney (LGA) shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 58.0% of the population used English only, and 34.8% used a non-English language, compared with 48.3% and 45.7% respectively for Western Sydney (LGA).

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Sydney was Mandarin, with 8.6% of the population, or 18,213 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (8.6% compared to 3.9%)
  • A larger percentage using Thai at home (2.8% compared to 0.3%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (0.7% compared to 7.1%)
  • A smaller percentage using Vietnamese at home (1.2% compared to 3.7%)

Emerging groups

Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 43,258 or 142.0%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 47,892 or 64.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Sydney between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+14,912 persons)
  • Thai (+4,953 persons)
  • Spanish (+3,687 persons)
  • Indonesian (+1,969 persons)
