Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Parramatta in 2021 compared to the City of Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 38.2% of the population used English only, and 56.4% used a non-English language, compared with 58.0% and 34.8% respectively for the City of Sydney.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Parramatta was Mandarin, with 12.4% of the population, or 31,823 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Parramatta and the City of Sydney in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Korean at home (5.5% compared to 1.0%)
  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (12.4% compared to 8.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (6.4% compared to 2.8%)
  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (3.7% compared to 0.8%)

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 77,291 or 114.5%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 3,419 or 3.6%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Parramatta between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Korean (+8,531 persons)
  • Hindi (+6,078 persons)
  • Cantonese (+4,622 persons)
