More Rest of Sydney male residents worked in professional, scientific and technical services than any other industry in 2021.

The Rest of Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Rest of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (94,854 males or 15.7%)
  • Construction (67,655 males or 11.2%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (57,571 males or 9.5%)

In combination, these three industries employed 220,080 males in total or 36.5% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Western Sydney (LGA) employed 8.1% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 14.1% in Construction; and 5.1% in Financial and Insurance Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of the Rest of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (15.7% compared to 8.1%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (9.5% compared to 5.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in manufacturing (4.6% compared to 9.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (5.3% compared to 9.7%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Rest of Sydney increased by 24,310 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in the Rest of Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+10,796 males)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+7,811 males)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (-6,992 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+6,826 males)
