The City of Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in City of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (13,347 males or 19.5%)
- Financial and Insurance Services (7,680 males or 11.2%)
- Accommodation and Food Services (5,592 males or 8.2%)
In combination, these three industries employed 26,619 males in total or 38.9% of the total employed male resident population.
In comparison, Australia employed 8.3% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 3.5% in Financial and Insurance Services; and 5.8% in Accommodation and Food Services.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of the City of Sydney and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (19.5% compared to 8.3%)
- A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (11.2% compared to 3.5%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in construction (6.3% compared to 14.7%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in manufacturing (2.8% compared to 8.1%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed males in City of Sydney increased by 5,230 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Sydney were for those employed in:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+2,350 males)
- Accommodation and Food Services (-2,115 males)
- Financial and Insurance Services (+1,642 males)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,007 males)
