More Rest of Sydney female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

The Rest of Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Rest of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (108,734 females or 18.8%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (78,910 females or 13.6%)
  • Education and Training (72,604 females or 12.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 260,248 females in total or 45.0% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Western Sydney (LGA) employed 22.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 6.9% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 12.8% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of the Rest of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (13.6% compared to 6.9%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (8.0% compared to 6.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (18.8% compared to 22.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in retail trade (8.4% compared to 10.8%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Rest of Sydney increased by 92,510 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2011 and 2021 in the Rest of Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+27,535 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+19,412 females)
  • Education and Training (+15,635 females)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+8,467 females)
