More Rest of Sydney residents worked in professional, scientific and technical services than any other industry in 2021.

The Rest of Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Rest of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (173,734 people or 14.7%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (147,774 people or 12.5%)
  • Education and Training (104,482 people or 8.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 425,990 people in total or 36.1% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Western Sydney (LGA) employed 7.5% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 13.7% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 8.2% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Rest of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (14.7% compared to 7.5%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (8.8% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (3.7% compared to 7.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (3.8% compared to 6.6%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Rest of Sydney increased by 63,329 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in the Rest of Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+23,072 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+23,004 persons)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+14,890 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (-12,512 persons)
