Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in the Rest of Sydney in 2021 compared to Western Sydney (LGA) shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 30.0% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 8.2% were one-parent families, compared with 40.1% and 12.5% respectively for Western Sydney (LGA).

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 25.7% compared to 18.0% in Western Sydney (LGA) while the proportion of couples without children was 25.8% compared to 20.4% in Western Sydney (LGA).

Emerging groups

The number of households in Rest of Sydney increased by 60,602 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in the Rest of Sydney between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+37,900 households)
  • Couples without children (+28,627 households)
  • Couples with children (+11,625 households)
  • One parent families (+6,616 households)
