In 2021, the largest age group in the Rest of Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 8,643 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of the Rest of Sydney in 2021 compared to Western Sydney (LGA) shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 16.6% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.9% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 21.4% and 12.6% respectively for Western Sydney (LGA).

The major differences between the male age structure of the Rest of Sydney and Western Sydney (LGA) were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (8.7% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 0 to 4 (5.3% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 5 to 9 (5.6% compared to 7.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 10 to 14 (5.6% compared to 7.0%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Rest of Sydney's male population increased by 46,599 people (4.3%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.85% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+8,643 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+6,657 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+6,526 males)
  • 10 to 14 (+6,461 males)
