In 2021, the largest age group in the Rest of Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1996 was 55 to 59 year olds, increasing by 53,425 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the Rest of Sydney in 2021 compared to the City of Canterbury Bankstown shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.8% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.8% and 14.9% respectively for the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

The major differences between the age structure of the Rest of Sydney and the City of Canterbury Bankstown were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.7% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (5.1% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (5.3% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (5.0% compared to 6.1%)

Emerging groups

From 1996 to 2021, Rest of Sydney's population increased by 558,096 people (32.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.14% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 55 to 59 (+53,425 persons)
  • 60 to 64 (+51,374 persons)
  • 30 to 34 (+48,126 persons)
  • 50 to 54 (+43,965 persons)
