Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by children aged 12 to 17 years in the City of Burnside in 2021 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 71.8% of children aged 12 to 17 years spoke English only, and 26.7% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 79.0% and 17.7% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by children aged 12 to 17 years in the City of Burnside was Mandarin, with 8.4% of the population, or 335 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for children aged 12 to 17 years of the City of Burnside and Greater Adelaide in 2021 were:
