In 2016, 18% of people in Canterbury, came from countries where English was not their first language.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in Canterbury in 2016 compared to the City of Boroondara shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas, as well as a smaller proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 26.3% of the population was born overseas, and 17.9% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 30.9% and 24.0% respectively for the City of Boroondara.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in Canterbury was China, where 7.9% of the population, or 607 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in Canterbury and the City of Boroondara were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in China (7.9% compared to 6.6%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in United Kingdom (4.6% compared to 3.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in India (1.3% compared to 2.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 33 or 1.7%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 171 or 14.2%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:
