Location and boundaries

Hawthorn East is bounded by Barkers Road in the north, a line that runs north-south to the west of Burke Road in the east, a line that runs east-west to the south of Toorak Road, Tooronga Road and the Monash Freeway in the south, and a line that runs north-south to the east of Auburn Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Population was minimal until the 1880s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Growth continued into the early 1900s. Expansion continued during the interwar period, particularly in the south. The population increased slightly between 1996 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area. The population and dwellings stock were relatively stable between 2006 and 2011.

Major features of the area include the Auburn Road shopping precinct, Rivoli Cinemas, Coles Group Corporate Head Office, Anderson Park, Cato Park, Fritsch Holzer Park, John Gardiner Reserve, Rathmines Road Reserve, Sir William Angliss Reserve, Victoria Road Reserve and a number of schools.
