The role of unpaid childcare in Greater Adelaide is determined by many different factors. Dominant groups
Analysis of the unpaid child care provided by the population in Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Canberra shows that there was a lower proportion of people who provided unpaid child care either to their own or to other children. Overall, 27.1% of the population provided unpaid child care, compared with 28.3% for Canberra.
The major differences between the share of the population providing unpaid child care in Greater Adelaide and Canberra were:
- A larger percentage who did not provide care for children (68.6% compared to 67.1%)
- A smaller percentage who provided unpaid childcare for own child/ren (19.2% compared to 20.9%)
Emerging groups
The number of people who provided unpaid child care for their own and/or other people's children in Greater Adelaide increased by 51,759 between 2006 and 2021.
The largest changes in the number of people performing unpaid child care in Greater Adelaide, between 2006 and 2021 were those who:
- No unpaid child care provided (+171,155 persons)
- Cared for own child/ren (+47,142 persons)
- Cared for other child/ren (+6,387 persons)
- Cared for own child/ren and other child/ren (-1,765 persons)
