Dominant groups
Analysis of the service age groups of Greater Brisbane in 2021 compared to Regional NT shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).
Overall, 23.0% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 19.9% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 23.1% and 17.5% respectively for Regional NT.
The major differences between the age structure of Greater Brisbane and Regional NT were:
- A larger percentage of 'Seniors' (8.6% compared to 5.5%)
- A larger percentage of 'Frail aged' (1.7% compared to 0.3%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Young workforce' (14.8% compared to 17.3%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (9.5% compared to 11.7%)
Emerging groups
From 1996 to 2021, Greater Brisbane's population increased by 977,905 people (63.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.99% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+181,463 people)
- Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+150,890 people)
- Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+138,125 people)
- Young workforce (25 to 34) (+130,099 people)
