Dominant groups
Analysis of the service age groups of Regional WA in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).
Overall, 23.0% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 24.2% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.7% and 23.0% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Regional WA and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (12.4% compared to 10.9%)
- A larger percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (13.7% compared to 12.4%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Young workforce' (12.5% compared to 14.3%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (6.7% compared to 8.5%)
Emerging groups
From 2006 to 2021, Regional WA's population increased by 87,528 people (19.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.2% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+29,121 people)
- Seniors (70 to 84) (+26,551 people)
- Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+14,328 people)
- Young workforce (25 to 34) (+8,272 people)
