Dominant groups
Analysis of the religious affiliation of the population of Greater Darwin in 2021 compared to Queensland shows that there was a lower proportion of people who professed a religion and a higher proportion who stated they had no religion.
Overall, 46.9% of the population nominated a religion, and 42.0% said they had no religion, compared with 50.7% and 41.0% respectively for Queensland.
The largest single religion in Greater Darwin was Western (Roman) Catholic, with 18.1% of the population or 25,306 people as adherents.
The major differences between the religious affiliation for the population of Greater Darwin and Queensland were:
- A larger percentage who nominated Greek Orthodox (2.9% compared to 0.5%)
- A larger percentage who nominated Hinduism (3.7% compared to 1.3%)
- A larger percentage who nominated Buddhism (3.0% compared to 1.4%)
- A smaller percentage who nominated Anglican (5.8% compared to 11.3%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the religious affiliation of the population in Greater Darwin between 2006 and 2021 were for those who nominated:
- Anglican (-5,849 persons)
- Hinduism (+4,804 persons)
- Uniting Church (-2,676 persons)
- Islam (+1,995 persons)
