There were more male technicians and trades workers in Greater Darwin in 2021 than any other occupation.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Darwin in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (9,209 males or 24.1%)
  • Professionals (6,168 males or 16.2%)
  • Managers (5,330 males or 14.0%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 20,707 males in total or 54.3% of the employed male resident population.

In comparison, Canberra employed 15.5% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 29.9% in Professionals; and 19.0% in Managers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Darwin and Canberra were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (24.1% compared to 15.5%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (9.3% compared to 4.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Professionals (16.2% compared to 29.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Managers (14.0% compared to 19.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Greater Darwin decreased by 710 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of male residents between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Darwin were for those employed as:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (-1,659 males)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+733 males)
  • Professionals (+553 males)
  • Labourers (-493 males)
