When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Greater Sydney's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (378,435 females or 32.3%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (241,593 females or 20.6%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (155,997 females or 13.3%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 776,025 females in total or 66.2% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Northern Territory employed 28.0% in Professionals; 20.2% in Clerical and Administrative Workers; and 18.1% in Community and Personal Service Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Sydney and Northern Territory were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (32.3% compared to 28.0%)
- A larger percentage of females employed as Sales Workers (9.2% compared to 8.1%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (13.3% compared to 18.1%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Labourers (4.8% compared to 6.4%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Greater Sydney increased by 103,655 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of female residents between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Sydney were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+65,411 females)
- Managers (+31,256 females)
- Sales Workers (-11,442 females)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+9,529 females)
