Occupation of employment

There were more male technicians and trades workers in South East Queensland in 2021 than any other occupation.

South East Queensland's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating South East Queensland's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in South East Queensland in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (189,053 males or 21.3%)
  • Professionals (178,428 males or 20.1%)
  • Managers (132,015 males or 14.9%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 499,496 males in total or 56.3% of the employed male resident population.

In comparison, Australia employed 20.9% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 20.4% in Professionals; and 16.0% in Managers.

The major difference between the jobs held by the male population of South East Queensland and Australia was:

  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Managers (14.9% compared to 16.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in South East Queensland increased by 111,931 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of male residents between 2016 and 2021 in South East Queensland were for those employed as:

  • Professionals (+34,124 males)
  • Managers (+21,102 males)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+15,864 males)
  • Machinery Operators And Drivers (+11,693 males)
