Regional NSW's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Regional NSW's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Regional NSW in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (239,901 people or 19.2%)
- Technicians and Trades Workers (181,749 people or 14.5%)
- Managers (167,707 people or 13.4%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 589,357 people in total or 47.1% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Greater Hobart employed 24.0% in Professionals; 13.2% in Technicians and Trades Workers; and 12.3% in Managers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Regional NSW and Greater Hobart were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (6.9% compared to 4.5%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Labourers (10.9% compared to 9.0%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (14.5% compared to 13.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (19.2% compared to 24.0%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Regional NSW increased by 179,613 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2011 and 2021 in Regional NSW were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+53,722 persons)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+50,235 persons)
- Managers (+23,639 persons)
- Technicians and Trades Workers (+19,084 persons)
