Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Greater Brisbane in 2021 compared to Regional SA shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 77.3% of the population used English only, and 17.7% used a non-English language, compared with 87.7% and 5.3% respectively for Regional SA.
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Greater Brisbane was Mandarin, with 2.5% of the population, or 64,045 people using this language at home.
The major difference between the languages used at home for the population of Greater Brisbane and Regional SA in 2021 was:
- A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (2.5% compared to 0.3%)
Emerging groups
Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 174,939 or 64.1%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 256,906 or 15.2%.
The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Greater Brisbane between 2011 and 2021 were for those using:
- Mandarin (+33,206 persons)
- Punjabi (+16,407 persons)
- Spanish (+8,434 persons)
- Filipino/Tagalog (+7,896 persons)
