Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Darwin in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Public Administration and Safety (7,266 males or 19.0%)
  • Construction (5,409 males or 14.2%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (2,726 males or 7.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 15,401 males in total or 40.4% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Victoria employed 5.5% in Public Administration and Safety; 15.7% in Construction; and 5.6% in Accommodation and Food Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Darwin and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in public administration and safety (19.0% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in manufacturing (3.7% compared to 9.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.4% compared to 9.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (0.7% compared to 4.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Greater Darwin decreased by 719 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Darwin were for those employed in:

  • Construction (-1,888 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,054 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (-668 males)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+607 males)
