Industry sector of employment

More Regional NT male residents worked in public administration and safety than any other industry in 2021.

Regional NT's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Regional NT in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Public Administration and Safety (3,089 males or 19.2%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,785 males or 11.1%)
  • Construction (1,656 males or 10.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 6,530 males in total or 40.6% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Northern Territory employed 19.0% in Public Administration and Safety; 8.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 13.0% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Regional NT and Northern Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.0% compared to 2.9%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (11.1% compared to 8.1%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in education and training (6.6% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in construction (10.3% compared to 13.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Regional NT increased by 186 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional NT were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+397 males)
  • Other Services (-378 males)
  • Construction (+181 males)
  • Arts and Recreation Services (+147 males)
