Industry sector of employment

More Regional NT female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Regional NT's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Regional NT in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (3,938 females or 25.0%)
  • Education and Training (2,739 females or 17.4%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (2,380 females or 15.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 9,057 females in total or 57.4% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Victoria employed 22.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.0% in Education and Training; and 5.8% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Regional NT and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (15.1% compared to 5.8%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in education and training (17.4% compared to 13.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (3.3% compared to 7.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in manufacturing (0.8% compared to 4.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Regional NT increased by 905 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional NT were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+741 females)
  • Other Services (-166 females)
  • Arts and Recreation Services (+138 females)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+129 females)
