Canberra's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Canberra in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Public Administration and Safety (37,487 females or 30.5%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (20,971 females or 17.1%)
- Education and Training (15,647 females or 12.7%)
In combination, these three industries employed 74,105 females in total or 60.3% of the total employed female resident population.
In comparison, Australia employed 6.5% in Public Administration and Safety; 23.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 13.2% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Canberra and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (30.5% compared to 6.5%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (17.1% compared to 23.3%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in retail trade (6.7% compared to 10.6%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in manufacturing (0.9% compared to 3.6%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Canberra increased by 22,010 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Canberra were for those employed in:
- Public Administration and Safety (+6,046 females)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+4,920 females)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3,524 females)
- Education and Training (+2,761 females)
