More Greater Brisbane female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Brisbane in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (146,676 females or 24.1%)
  • Education and Training (81,029 females or 13.3%)
  • Retail Trade (61,014 females or 10.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 288,719 females in total or 47.4% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Regional NT employed 25.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 17.4% in Education and Training; and 7.4% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Brisbane and Regional NT were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (7.8% compared to 3.3%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (3.5% compared to 0.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (6.4% compared to 15.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in education and training (13.3% compared to 17.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Greater Brisbane increased by 93,931 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Brisbane were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+37,188 females)
  • Education and Training (+10,637 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+9,628 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+5,439 females)
