Industry sector of employment

More Regional NSW male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Regional NSW's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Regional NSW in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (102,138 males or 16.1%)
  • Manufacturing (51,777 males or 8.2%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (49,017 males or 7.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 202,932 males in total or 31.9% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Australia employed 14.7% in Construction; 8.1% in Manufacturing; and 6.8% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Regional NSW and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (7.1% compared to 3.1%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (16.1% compared to 14.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.8% compared to 8.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (1.4% compared to 3.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Regional NSW increased by 63,194 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional NSW were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+17,190 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+10,778 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+5,461 males)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+5,006 males)
