More Greater Sydney female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Greater Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (246,426 females or 21.0%)
  • Education and Training (148,081 females or 12.6%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (118,733 females or 10.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 513,240 females in total or 43.8% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 17.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 12.7% in Education and Training; and 9.3% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Sydney and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (6.8% compared to 1.5%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (21.0% compared to 17.1%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in retail trade (9.7% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (5.2% compared to 30.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Greater Sydney increased by 212,141 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2011 and 2021 in Greater Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+73,654 females)
  • Education and Training (+39,795 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+31,279 females)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+13,882 females)
