More Regional VIC male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Regional VIC in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (62,785 males or 17.2%)
  • Manufacturing (38,378 males or 10.5%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (35,600 males or 9.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 136,763 males in total or 37.4% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 11.6% in Construction; 2.4% in Manufacturing; and 0.3% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Regional VIC and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (9.7% compared to 0.3%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (10.5% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in public administration and safety (6.3% compared to 29.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.4% compared to 12.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Regional VIC increased by 43,487 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional VIC were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+13,909 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+5,685 males)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+3,452 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3,157 males)
