More South Australia female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

South Australia's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in South Australia in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (106,692 females or 26.2%)
  • Education and Training (52,938 females or 13.0%)
  • Retail Trade (44,896 females or 11.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 204,526 females in total or 50.2% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 17.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 12.7% in Education and Training; and 6.7% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of South Australia and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (26.2% compared to 17.1%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in retail trade (11.0% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (6.3% compared to 30.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.8% compared to 9.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in South Australia increased by 59,725 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2011 and 2021 in South Australia were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+26,925 females)
  • Education and Training (+12,426 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+4,561 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+3,570 females)
