Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Capital Cities in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (590,905 males or 14.2%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (416,384 males or 10.0%)
  • Manufacturing (334,987 males or 8.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 1,342,276 males in total or 32.3% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 11.6% in Construction; 12.5% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 2.4% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Capital Cities and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (8.1% compared to 2.4%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (7.2% compared to 3.4%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (4.6% compared to 1.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in public administration and safety (6.1% compared to 29.1%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Greater Capital Cities were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+207,430 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+156,873 males)
  • Manufacturing (-139,059 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+125,159 males)
