Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Greater Hobart in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (19,998 people or 16.8%)
- Education and Training (12,473 people or 10.5%)
- Public Administration and Safety (11,826 people or 10.0%)
In combination, these three industries employed 44,297 people in total or 37.3% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Victoria employed 14.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 8.8% in Education and Training; and 5.6% in Public Administration and Safety.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Greater Hobart and Victoria were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (10.0% compared to 5.6%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (16.8% compared to 14.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (6.4% compared to 8.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (5.1% compared to 7.0%)

The number of employed people in Greater Hobart increased by 21,865 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2021 in Greater Hobart were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+7,594 persons)
- Education and Training (+3,152 persons)
- Construction (+2,807 persons)
- Accommodation and Food Services (+2,375 persons)
