Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Melbourne in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (254,516 females or 21.7%)
  • Education and Training (152,253 females or 13.0%)
  • Retail Trade (125,884 females or 10.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 532,653 females in total or 45.4% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Victoria employed 22.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.0% in Education and Training; and 10.9% in Retail Trade.

The major difference between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Melbourne and Victoria was:

  • A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (21.7% compared to 22.9%)

The number of employed females in Greater Melbourne increased by 174,266 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Melbourne were for those employed in:
